Date Night in Edmonton – Deadmonton

It’s that season again, when the leaves are starting to turn color and the smell of pumpkin spice is everywhere. And – the haunted houses are opening up!!

Deadmonton is not an event that I would have recommended. I’m am NOT into scary movies, and I sure don’t like the thought of someone chasing me down with a chainsaw. Not to mention all of the creepy creatures lurking in the darkness, just waiting to terrify some unsuspecting soul.

However… we have friends and the wife goes every. year. I was a hard pass at first, but it was a nice chance to hang out with our BMX family not at a BMX event for a change.

So off we went: Opening Night at Deadmonton.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the night:

  • Dress for the weather, and wear layers! The night that we went it rained (poured, actually) for our entire drive in and that wasn’t even in the forecast. Thankfully it stopped when we arrived, but a lot of the activities are outside and once the sun goes down the temp drops quickly. You may want to shed a layer when you go into the indoor haunted house because TRUST ME you will warm up quickly!!
  • Know that the parking lot is located across the street from the venue. Stay in the left lane and you will find the (free) parking lot just down 71st Ave.
  • If you take your kids, know their comfort level because it is very freaky. We didn’t take ours, however we will definitely be going back with them! They’re 12 & 13 now and I’m convinced that one of them might be sleeping our room for a while afterwards, but they want to go and I think they would have so much fun!!
  • Moms: If you have a weak bladder USE THE BATHROOM BEFORE YOU GO IN!!!! Lol

The first part of the venue is the common area, and there are lots of places to sit, warm up by the huge campfires, have some cocktails and even a bite to eat.

This bar is really nice!! I love the rustic vibe of it!
This is a shot from the rooftop bar - you can see lots of fire pits, the food truck, and plenty of spots to take pics for Instagram!

You’ll find a lot of actors in the common area as well – all of them are creepy, and they stay in character the whole time. I visited with a ’boy’ named Jeffrey, who was telling me all about the game of hide and seek that he and his brother Simon played at camp. They snuck into the graveyard, and they were taking turns finding each other. He was telling me all about the places they hid, and now Simon is still hiding and no one can find him. Jeff really wants his turn to hide, and now there are parents, people in uniforms (police), helicopters, dogs, and the community all trying to help Jeff find Simon. He thinks it’s fun, although I think Jeff might also be dead because he’s got a gaping wound on his hand and his face/head and it does not look promising for him. 😉

Meet Jeff - poor kid, doesn’t look like he’s going to live long.
Jeff is always up for a pic!
I have no idea who these guys are, but I don’t think they’re from a gory movie??? I could be wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️
They were actually very friendly characters, and very polite!
It’s the perfect Date Night!!
The creep level of this nun is off the charts!!
This is the only character that I did know, and it’s not because I’ve seen the movie!
We went with two other couples, and it was so fun!!

When you’re ready to go into the haunted houses, I personally think the best way to do it would be do the outside/graveyard one first and then do the indoor one next. I found the graveyard to be very scary, however the indoor haunted house is terrifying!!! Sadly you can’t take pictures or video when we’re in there, so you will have to take my word that this is not for the faint of heart.

Spoiler alerts ahead:

The graveyard is very narrow and there are dead people hiding behind everything. Some parts you walk past have people grabbing your legs from below, and they have this ultra creepy character from one of the few scary movies that I’ve seen called The Ring – you know the girl that walks funny and crawls out of the well?? She chased us with her crawly/walk/run and OMG please NO!!!! Lol. I really have no idea what the other stuff in the graveyard was supposed to be, but it was all freaky. There are things chasing you and screaming at you… like I said, not for the faint of heart.

And if you think that’s bad, wait until you get into the indoor house!!! It’s darker in there, and there are even more creepy things lying in wait for their next victims. I was chased by a guy with a chainsaw more than once, there is some murderer just wandering around yelling at people, an alien in the swamp (??) and another alien that jumps out and towers over you and makes some horrific noise. We walked through a cellar with body parts, people being tortured on tables. Frankenstein was there and he made me scream when he came up behind me. (Who am I kidding – I was nonstop screaming in there! 😂).

It’s hard to narrow down what my least favorite room was in here (that means the most awful, horrific, blood-curdling experience that others would call their most favorite). I would have to say the lady on the bed: I’ve heard she’s from the movie The Exorcist. She is screaming and crying and chasing us and it makes my skin crawl just thinking about it. The part with the aliens is very cool because they use green lasers and a fog machine so for one thing it’s hard to see where you’re going and it’s a very immersive experience. I also did not enjoy the crazy man upstairs that was crazy-talking about I don’t even remember what. 😱 I was just like – get me the hell out of here! 😆

Oh – another scary experience, perhaps the most scary, was this alarming looking creature in overalls that kept following us around! That wasn’t the scary part, though. We were trying to take a selfie with all six of us so he came over and offered to take the pic for us! Super sweet, and he took some great pics! Then, he went to hand my phone back and instead he bolted out of there!! At first I laughed, then after a while I started to get worried because he was gone for so long! He eventually came back and teased me with my phone! It was hilarious, and I forgave him. Lol. He stayed in character the whole time, although I think he might be my boyfriend now??

My boyfriend?? 🤪
We were in the lineup to get into the indoor haunted house, then when he ’swiped’ my phone he went to the rooftop bar and took a selfie!! 😂 🤣 I was so happy to see him when he got back! 😅
This guy is hilarious!!
He left me for my friends. Easy come, easy go! Haha

Another guy that will come around and interact with you is this guy 👇 He showed us that money is the root of all evil, and he read my fortune to me. Apparently last night was my Judgement Day and I was going to meet my maker in the graveyard! He does magic tricks for you and is highly entertaining!!!

Money is the root of all evil.
Pick a card, any card! But not that one!! 🫣💀

10/10 Recommend Deadmonton as a must-do for date night!!
